Antique traditional Peranakan Carved Wooden Jewellery Box with three carved drawers, painted and gilded.
A box such as this would have been used by a Peranakan lady to house jewellery or other small items. The Peranakan are descendants of the Chinese who settled in parts of Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, this group of people are also referred to as “Baba Nonya”, Baba meaning man and Nonya for a women.
The straits born descendants of the Chinese settlers married into the local communities, developing their own unique culture, food, dress, furniture, housing and customs which survive to this day in several parts of Asia and especially so Malacca in Malaysia one can experience the richness of this culture in hotels, restaurants and antique shops selling objects such as this box which would have been used during this bygone era.
