The Laughing Buddha Thai Buddhist Bone Amulet Talisman is not to be confused with the Chinese Laughing Buddha. In Thailand He is a widely respected monk in Thai folklore and legend. He is referred to as Phra Sangkajai or Phra Sangkachai and was a Buddhist Arhata/Arahat during the time of the Buddha.

The legend of Phra Sangkajai is that the Buddha upon first hearing him praised him for his teachings saying that he had the ability to teach in a very clear manner.

In Thai folklore it is said that Phra Sangkajai was so good looking that even a man wanted him to be his wife. To avoid further advances from male suitors he transformed himself into a fat monk which made him a very popular and much loved monk.
