A beautiful Early 20th Century Burmese Reclining Mandalay Buddha Statue from the Mandalay Area, in very good condition, no breakages. Gild and lacquer worn with age.

The reclining position of the Buddha is seen in two forms, one where he is seen dying, the Buddha knew that his death was near and he asked his disciples to prepare a couch for him, whereupon he lay on his right side facing west with his head supported by his right hand, this posture is recognized by the feet when they are aligned and is referred to as the parinirvana posture and is the moment when the Buddha entered into nirvana. The other reclining posture is in a relaxed resting or sleeping posture where the feet of the Buddha are seen slightly set apart one in front of the other.
