An impressive Pre 18th C Burmese Wooden Buddha Statue with lips curved upwards in a gentle smile, painted eyes cast downwards with painted fingernails. Elongated ear lobes rest on the shoulders with an incised lapel depicting the outline of the robe draped over the left shoulder and falling over the left knee. Knobs of thayo lacquer represent hair curls with a large bulbous finial tapering into a point on top of a rounded usnisha.

The seated Buddha is seen here with hand gesture in Bhumisparsa mudra, symbolic of overcoming the last obstacle before enlightenment, “Calling earth to Witness”, seated atop a tall carved pedestal representative of a double lotus flower. Hair curls are represented by small pointed knobs of thayo lacquer with a narrow band running from ear to ear. The facial features and style are similar to many Pagan Buddha statues of the 11th – 12th Century.

Very nice patina on this old Buddha Statue with traces of gild remaining, lacquer worn with age, cracks on base, one cracks shows signs of repair, some glue residue remains.
