Antique Mythological Bronze Duck Borneo – with dragon like head, webbed feet, incised pattern representative of feathers and scales and a dragon like head. This mythological creature is reminiscent of the Burmese Nawa Rupa, a creature in Burmese legends of an animal with a combination of nine different animal parts.
Mythological creatures found throughout Asia and China are many and diverse, they play a role in the beliefs, customs and traditions of the numerous ethnic tribes throughout the whole of South East Asia. Many of these mythological creatures have their origins dating back thousands of years.
This bronze mythological creature is more than likely a creature from the myths of the Dayak people of Borneo. It represents the male and the female bird/dragon, it is seen in motifs, paintings and sculptures in tribal Dayak Art.
Condition in keeping with a piece that would have been used in a village in Borneo well over 100 years ago. A couple of small areas with verdigris.
