17th – 18th Century Burmese Shan Marble Buddha Statue decorated with thayo lacquer scroll decoration, green coloured inlaid glass mosaics outline the lapel and edges of the robe. Hand gesture is in Bhumisparsa Mudra with the right-hand touching earth.
This marble Buddha statue shows a strong broad chest and neck, broad nose with high arched eyebrows, elongated large ears with painted eyes cast downwards and seated on a single lotus pedestal. This statue like many very old statues has been refurbished with a brown lacquer on the hair and body. This type of brown lacquer is often applied in preparation for gilding.
