This statue is from the Innwa area, situated in central Myanmar along the Ayeyarwady river 15 or 16 miles south of Mandalay. Inwa was founded in 1364 and was the ancient imperial capital of Burma from the 14th to the 19th Century. Inwa, also known as the Kingdom of Ava was ruled by a succession of Burmese kings up until 1767.  In 1839 a series of large earthquakes destroyed the capital after which the royal capital was moved to Amarapura a township in Mandalay.

During this period and up until the mid to late 1700’s Buddha statues were made in great numbers to accommodate the large number of monasteries, temples and palaces that were built during that period. Today, much of the remains of this past civilization is in ruins.
